About us
Our mandate
The Canadian Human Rights Tribunal hears complaints about discrimination that are sent to us by the Canadian Human Rights Commission.
We hear appeals about pay equity for employees in the federal sector. We also answer questions about pay equity from the Pay Equity Commissioner.
With the passing of the Accessible Canada Act, we have the role of hearing appeals about barriers to accessibility.
The Employment Equity Act empowers us to review decisions made by the Canadian Human Rights Commission about employment practices in the federal sector. The purpose of the Act is to increase employment for underrepresented groups.
The Tribunal is like a court, but it is less formal. We are independent of the federal government. That means that no one in the government can tell us how to decide our cases.
